Mae and I began the film making process with little knowledge of basically everything involved with film making. However, we quickly adapted during the whole experience and gained many skills in different areas of film making.
The first thing we realized is that what you think will look good in your head can turn out awkward or have a totally different effect from what you desired. The majority of our scenes were made up on the spot. This is not because we were unprepared, but because the scenes we planned on shooting did not flow well together. This was only a minor setback time-wise because we were able to quickly adapt and think of scenes which produced our desired effect. Another thing we learned about shooting scenes was which camera angles and distances made a visually appealing sequence. We also learned to time differet shots of the same scene so that it looks like we never stopped recording to get a dfferent angle. For example, in The Girl, we have a midshot of Mae at the picnic table packing up her backpack and then we had Mae freeze and I moved to get a high angle shot, then resumed the filming to where it looks like Mae never stopped moving.
Editing is a huge part of the film making process and Mae and I had little background experience or knowledge of it. Luckily, iMovie was easy to understand and get the hang of. We used iMovie for visual things like editing the brightness and saturation of certain scenes. We experimented with different levels of saturation and brightness and found which settings made our scenes look the best. Another visual we used iMovie for was the fonts and credits on the first few shots. We also used iMovie for non-visual things such as adjusting scene length, increasing or decreasing audio, and adding additional sound effects, like the police sirens at the beginning of the film. The non-visual part of editing was the most difficult thing for us to become familiar with. Overall, editing had many intricate steps and requirements but Mae and I were able to successfully become familiar with everything we needed.
