Film Project Genre Research- The Shining

The Shining is a classic horror movie created in 1980. The first shot in the opening is an establishing shot which sets the scene. A helicoptor is used for smooth movement as the camera swerves right, showing the incredible scenery. This sweeping motion carries the shot through making the viewer intrigued to continue watching. The opening scene uses sounds that suggest a horror movie. The deep funeral like beat creates a depressing mood. Accompanied with the depressing tone are the occasionally high pitched whales that seem distorted. These sounds imply danger and something being 'wrong' almost like a warning as the VW Beetle climbs higher into the mountains. The entire opening is tracking the yellow VW Beetle in a series of aerial shots, this suggests that the destination is important. The multiple aerial shots, with canted angles makes the mountains look superior and dominant compared to the tiny yellow car. The "fade" edit is used between the aerial camera shots to compliment the smoothness of the scene. The Shining made a healthy 44 million and won the Saturn Award for Best Actor.
